Conduit fill is not hard math. The trap is table order. Count the conductors first, use the right conductor area, use the right raceway area, then round down when you are finding the maximum number that fits. Each 12 AWG THHN is 0.0133 sq in. Nine conductors use 0.1197 sq in. Half-inch EMT has 0.304 sq in inside, and 40% of that is 0.1216 sq in. Nine fit. Ten do not.
Here is the trap: you do not round up because the answer is close. When the next conductor pushes the area over the limit, that next conductor does not fit.

- Using 40% on every problem. Three or more conductors use 40%. One conductor uses 53%. Two conductors use 31%.
- Picking the wrong raceway row. EMT, RMC, IMC, and PVC do not all have the same internal area. Same trade size, different answer.
- Ignoring insulation type. THHN and XHHW can use different Table 5 areas. If the question gives the insulation, use it.
- Rounding the conductor count up. If you are finding how many conductors fit, divide allowed area by conductor area and round down.

No. Conduit fill compares conductor cross-sectional area to raceway area. Box fill counts volume allowances inside a box. The names sound close, but the tables and the setup are different.
