The facts a master practice test has to respect
Before you trust any practice product, including ours, check it against what TDLR and PSI actually publish. These are the facts we can source. Where a number is not published in our sources, we say so instead of inventing one.
- Scoring: TDLR reports Master results as two separately-scored parts, NEC and Calculations.
- Master NEC part, FY2025: 771 passed of 3,472 on the Master NEC part (22.21%).
- Master Calculations part, FY2025: 753 passed of 3,946 on the Master Calculations part (19.08%).
- Code book: Open book. The PSI bulletin references the NEC 2023, moving to the 2026 NEC on September 1, 2026.

What the FY2025 pass rates tell you about practice
TDLR's FY2025 statistics score the Master exam as two parts, and both ran lower than the journeyman equivalents. The Master NEC part passed 22.21% against 24.46% for journeyman NEC Knowledge. The Master Calculations part passed 19.08% against 20.56% for journeyman Calculations. That makes Master Calculations the lowest published pass rate of the four.
Read that as a practice instruction. These are experienced journeymen failing, not first-timers. The part that fails the most candidates is the calculation part, so a practice plan that spends most of its time on code lookup questions is rehearsing the part you are most likely to pass anyway.
What a Texas master practice test has to cover
A master practice exam should not feel like a harder journeyman quiz with a new title. The exam pulls from more of the NEC and puts real weight on the larger calculations a master signs off on. Check any practice bank against this list.
- Service and feeder load calculations, dwelling and commercial, under NEC Article 220. The standard and optional methods, worked end to end.
- Motor branch-circuit conductor sizing from the full-load-current tables, not the nameplate (NEC 430.22).
- Conductor ampacity derating for ambient temperature and bundling (NEC 310.15).
- Branch-circuit conductor sizing and the 125% continuous-load rule (NEC 210.19 and 210.20).
- Transformer sizing and the broader code coverage the master adds beyond the installation-heavy journeyman articles.
- Open-book navigation speed. Every one of the above is a lookup under the clock, so a practice test should train the path to the right table, not just recall.
Score the two parts separately
TDLR reports the Master NEC and Calculations results separately. A practice test that hands you one blended percentage can call you ready while the calculation work is quietly failing. Insist on practice that scores calculations on their own, because that is how the state will score you.
Master electrician test prep, in order

- Then run timed practice on the edition you will test on, and confirm counts, timing, and book rules in the current PSI bulletin.
