NEC 2026
Open book: bring your own soft-bound NEC
70% on each of two separately-scored parts
Since March 2025 the exam is two separately-scored parts, and the Calculations part fails the most people. A strong code score no longer carries a weak math score.
References provided at the test center: you cannot bring your own
70% to pass
References are provided at the test center as on-screen PDFs you search, so the skill that decides it is knowing the Code's words and section numbers to search for, not memorizing the rules or tabbing a book.
Open book: bring your own bound 2023 NEC, factory tabs only
75% to pass
Michigan needs 75%, five points higher than most states, and it is open book. Fast, accurate navigation in your bound code book is what clears the higher bar, and only factory tabs and markings are allowed, so you cannot index it yourself.

2020 NEC (exam edition)
Open book: bring your own, including Q&A reference books
70% on each of two sections, scored separately
About a fifth of the exam is a separate Washington Laws & Rules section on RCW 19.28 and WAC 296-46B that you pass on its own, and generic NEC prep skips it. The exam also still tests the 2020 NEC, not the 2023 field code.
