NEC Index Keyword Drills for the California Electrician Exam

The index is the fastest tool in the book, but only if you search the right word. The exam asks in plain language; the index files the answer under a code term. Train the translation.

What to train

  • Translating job-site words into index terms before you open the index.
  • A short list of the synonyms the exam leans on most.
  • Jumping straight to the article number the index gives, not skimming nearby pages.
  • Using the article's own subsection list to land the exact rule.

What slows candidates down

  • Searching for the job-site word and finding nothing because it is filed under a synonym.
  • Giving up on the index and flipping page by page.
  • Landing on the right article but reading from the top instead of the subsection.
  • Not knowing the index lists definitions under the defined term, not the plain word.

Mini drill: find it fast

Close the book. Read each cue, say the index keyword you would search and the article out loud, then check yourself. If it takes more than fifteen seconds, that one goes on your tab list.
