Feeder Practice Questions for the California Electrician Exam
Feeder questions punish two mistakes: treating the whole load as continuous, or treating none of it as continuous. Only the continuous part gets the cushion. Here is the rule, the trap, and an original question worked through.

What the exam is really testing
- Splitting the load into continuous and noncontinuous parts.
- Applying 125% to the continuous part only, per 215.2 and 215.3.
- Article 220 demand factors that reduce calculated load below connected load.
- Distinguishing a feeder (ends at another device) from a branch circuit.
The trap
Candidates apply 125% to everything, or to nothing. Only the continuous load gets the 25% cushion. The noncontinuous load is counted at 100%.
Try an original question
A feeder supplies a 100-amp continuous load and a 60-amp noncontinuous load.
Per NEC 215.2 and 215.3, what minimum feeder conductor ampacity is required?
- A160 amps
- B175 amps
- 185 amps
- D200 amps
Answer C. 215.2 and 215.3 require the feeder to carry 125% of the continuous load plus 100% of the noncontinuous load. 100 times 1.25 equals 125, plus 60 equals 185 amps.

Why the other answers tempt you
- A: 160 amps adds both loads at 100% and skips the continuous 125%.
- B: 175 amps applies the 125% to the wrong total.
- D: 200 amps applies 125% to the noncontinuous load too, which is not required.
