Can I bring my own NEC book to the TDLR exam?
You bring your own NEC 2023 to the TDLR exam. It must be soft-bound. Notes, highlighting, and permanent publisher tabs are allowed only if added before the session. Loose-leaf, spiral, ring-bound books, homemade tabs, loose paper, and the NEC Handbook are not allowed.
Is the TDLR Journeyman exam open book?
Yes. Both parts of the TDLR Journeyman exam are open book against your own soft-bound NEC 2023. Open book does not mean easy. You still have 26 calculation questions in 110 minutes and 59 knowledge questions in 130 minutes, so the exam is won on how fast you find rules, not on having the book.
How many hours do you need to take the Texas journeyman electrician exam?
You can sit for the TDLR Journeyman exam at 7,000 hours of work under a licensed Texas Master Electrician. You need 8,000 hours to actually hold the license once you pass. So you are allowed to test before you reach the full requirement, which lets you knock out the exam while the last 1,000 hours roll in.
How much does the Texas journeyman electrician exam cost?
The TDLR Journeyman exam fee is $78 and it covers both portions, the NEC Knowledge part and the Calculations part. A retake is also $78 if you fail one or both parts. The initial license application is mailed in with a $30 fee, and the license renews for $30 a year after that.
