The Michigan prep landscape, honestly

Search for Michigan electrician prep and you mostly find two things. The first is generic national course mills that sell the same package in every state, with a thin Michigan label slapped on top. The second is static practice books and PDF question dumps that were typed up years ago and never updated. Neither was built for the test you sit at a PSI center.

The bigger problem hides in the code edition. Michigan moved to the 2023 NEC for Part 8 effective March 12, 2024, and LARA confirms exams are based on the 2023 edition. Plenty of prep is still running on the 2017 code. If your practice answers cite the wrong edition, you are rehearsing the wrong rule, and you find out on test day.

What to look for before you pay

You do not need the biggest question bank. You need prep that matches the Michigan journeyman exam and trains the skill open book actually rewards. Use this as your checklist.

  • 2023 NEC, not 2017: every question and explanation should cite the current edition Michigan tests.
  • Journeyman-specific: it should train the LARA journeyman exam, not the master or electrical contractor exam.
  • Open-book lookup training: the exam is open book, so speed finding the rule in your own tabbed book matters more than memorizing it.
  • Diagnostic-first: it should show your weakest NEC chapters before you grind, so you drill the right thing.
  • Original questions: ones that cite the article and explain the traps, never copied real exam questions, which are a legal and accuracy problem.

Where JourneymanIQ fits

We built JourneymanIQ to clear that checklist for Michigan. It trains the journeyman exam only, runs entirely on the 2023 NEC, and starts with a free diagnostic so you are not paying to drill chapters you have already got. No pass promises and no money back claims. We tell you which NEC chapters to focus on, in priority order, based on what the diagnostic shows.

How the first test works

  1. Run the free diagnostic across the NEC chapters the Michigan exam tests.
  2. See your projected score and the chapters behind the misses.
  3. Drop into practice and a 30-day plan that targets the weak chapters first.

What you get inside

Once the diagnostic shows where you stand, the paid platform is built to close the gap, all tuned to the Michigan open-book exam.

  • 130+ original NEC questions, each citing the 2023 article.
  • 4 working calculators: voltage drop, box fill, conduit fill, dwelling load.
  • A 30-day daily plan that re-targets your weak chapters after every session.
  • Plain-English study guides, including a Michigan exam-strategy guide.
