Staff Answer

How many 12 AWG THHN conductors fit in 1/2 inch EMT?

Nine. Half-inch EMT allows about 0.122 square inches at the 40 percent fill limit, and a 12 AWG THHN is 0.0133 square inches. Nine conductors come to about 0.120 square inches, which fits, and ten would not. Annex C Table C.1 lists the same answer if you would rather look it up than calculate.

Find the raceway area at 40 percent

Chapter 9 Table 4 gives 1/2 inch EMT about 0.304 square inches total, and 40 percent of that is about 0.122 square inches for three or more conductors.

Find the conductor area

Chapter 9 Table 5 lists 12 AWG THHN at 0.0133 square inches each.

Divide and round down

0.122 divided by 0.0133 is about 9.2, so nine conductors fit. You always round down on fill. Annex C Table C.1 confirms nine 12 AWG THHN in 1/2 inch EMT.

Bottom line

Nine 12 AWG THHN in half-inch EMT. Calculate it, or read it straight from Annex C.
